Phone theft is an issue of great concern, especially at times when they have become so advanced. Earlier, the phones were only used to make phone calls, send texts, check the time, but now the smartphones have become portable PCs that are used to browse the internet, shop online, and do far more than just make calls. Obviously, these high-end devices definitely don’t come at a lower price. The company introduced “Activation Lock” with its iOS 7 in September 2014, which enable users to disable their devices in case of loss or theft. Schneiderman has said that the company’s security measure is very effective resulting in a “significant” decline in iPhone-related theft in three major cities – New York, San Francisco, and London, according to reports by the New York Times (NYT). Schneiderman has been quoted saying NYT in an interview that “the introduction of kill switches has clearly had an effect on the conduct of smartphone thieves. If these can be cancelled like the equivalent of cancelling a credit card, these are going to be the equivalent of stealing paperweight.” San Francisco police have said that after the introduction of security feature, iPhone robberies in the city have reduced by 38%, while in London the cases dropped by 24%.
