It seems Nokia and RIM has decided to lock away their differences and cut a deal with each other to avoid the unpleasant legal battle. Nokia has gone ahead and signed a new licensing patent deal with RIM. This means that Research in Motion RIM will have to ear mark one-off payment (the amount remains disclosed) to Nokia, followed by a series of on-going cash flow to avoid further tiff. “We are very pleased to have resolved our patent licensing issues with RIM and reached this new agreement, while maintaining Nokia’s ability to protect our unique product differentiation,” said Paul Melin, chief intellectual property officer at Nokia. “This agreement demonstrates Nokia’s industry leading patent portfolio and enables us to focus on further licensing opportunities in the mobile communications market.” The two firms have taken this call at a time when Balckberry 10 is nearing the launch. This announcement means that all existing patent disputes and outstanding court cases between the two firms will be withdrawn in the U.S., U.K. and Canada.
