Hoebel invested several hours searching satellite images from his home in Tonawanda, New York. Based on his research, he claimed to have discovered an outline of the plane underneath the Indian Ocean. He claimed to have discovered the plane in one piece beneath the water off the northeast coast of Malaysia, which is exactly the same location where, at one time, the rescue teams were searching the missing plane. Hoebel was searching the images through a crowd-sourcing website called TomNod.com. The alleged discovery by Hoebel came just a day before the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott carried out a press conference in order to talk about the next steps for the search for the missing plane. He stated to have scale down or reduce the surface search for the missing plane as there are very less chances of finding debris from the plane. He added that most of the material of the missing plane would have become waterlogged and sunk. Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has been reported missing since March 8 2014 when it departed from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. The Boeing 777 was accommodating a total of 239 people, including 227 passengers and 12 crew members. The plane was last detected by radar at a military base at 2:40 a.m. local time near Pulau Perak, and after that Subang air traffic control lost contact with the plane. The station did not receive any distress signal or radio communication regarding any change of course.
